Exploring the Potential of Ecotourism in Morocco's Anti-Atlas

Implementing innovative ecotourism approaches in Morocco

This project is a continuation of the SDRT action plan, which aligns with the strategic orientations of the Souss Massa region and aims to develop rural tourism, preserve its natural and cultural assets and promote job creation for the local population.

This initiative is the result of a close collaboration between the SDRT Souss Massa, a government entity responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of tourism projects in the Souss Massa region in Southern Morocco, and Aziza Chaouni Projects (ACP), an architecture and research office based in Fez  which has worked in the ecotourism field across the globe.

The SDRT Souss Massa invited ACP to propose a new approach to government tourism projects in distressed areas subject to climate change impacts.

ACP proposes an approach based on 1) an in-depth analysis of the site, 2) a co-design method involving a wide array of local stakeholders and 3) creative constructive and nature preservation design solutions. Our goal is to make the project emerge from its contexts constraints and needs: ecological, social, economical etc...and most importantly to give a voice to local rural populations, who will benefit the most from these new projects, as both leisure and income generating spaces.

Boutbouqalt Spring

This  project is designed to highlight the unique ecosystems around the Boutbouqalt Spring, to protect its water resources/ fauna and flora, to preserve the architectural heritage of its ancient souk, while  offering leisure infrastructure and ecotouristic activities. This will in turn create jobs for the local community.

#2
The Targua N’touchka Spring

This project aims to restructure the currently chaotic Targua N’touchka Spring, while connecting it to its oasis, which is one of the most biodiverse in Morocco as it produces dates, papaya, avocados, grapes, bananas etc...

The spring is currently the only leisure outlet for the local population, and the proposed design addresses their needs. It proposes parking, new access to the spring, kiosks with cafes and small snack stands, a communal kitchen [all using produce from the oasis], a covered pool for women, and rehabilitated pools for men.

Anmel

This project aims to showcase the exquisite geological features and ancient argan trees of the Anmel Valley, situated in close proximity to the city of Tafraout. Specifically, the project intends to introduce a panoramic viewing platform that offers an encompassing perspective of the valley's geological formations. Additionally, the plan includes the establishment of a park that captures the renowned Lion's Head, a prominent rock formation integral to Mount Lex. Lastly, a focal point of the project is the creation of an outdoor argan interpretation hub, thoughtfully designed around an expansive argan tree.
